Founded after 1668 Higganum Connecticut is a census designated place inside of Middlesex county.  Higganum lies directly on the Connecticut river and the name Higganum comes from the Higganumpus indians which means "great bend in river".  The town covers 13.2 square kilometers and is home to more than 1,600 people.  Higganum is located on route 9 just south of Middletown.  The center of Higganum is the focal point of the town today as much as it was in the 1800's home to many amenities and services.  Higganum Connecticut is also home to Burr Elementary school and Haddam-Killingworth High school.
